Who we are

The Epsilon Chapter is the UNC-Chapel Hill chapter of Beta Phi Mu, the International Library & Information Studies Honor Society. Beta Phi Mu was founded at the University of Illinois in August 1948 to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information studies students.

About ten years later, early in 1958, the Epsilon Chapter was established at the University of North Carolina Library School. A letter (PDF) from Beta Phi Mu Executive Secretary Harold Lancour to Charlotte Georgi at the UNC Library, dated February 25, 1958, enthusiastically welcomes the new chapter.

The Epsilon Chapter’s bylaws (PDF) spell out guidelines regarding membership, officers, dues, initiation, and more.
